President Joe Biden signed an executive order to simplify the process of granting permanent residency to at least 500,000 undocumented spouses of US citizens.

Overview

President Joe Biden signed an executive order to simplify the process of granting permanent residency to at least 500,000 undocumented spouses of US citizens. The changes apply to those who have resided in the US for at least 10 years and have been married to a US citizen since before June 17, 2024. The measure also benefits 50,000 stepchildren of US citizens, children of illegal aliens, and accelerates the issuance of work visas for foreign graduates from US universities. Now, irregular migrants married to Americans, along with their children, will not need to leave the United States to apply for permanent residence (green card). After a case-by-case evaluation by the Department of Homeland Security, those approved will have a period of three years to apply for permanent residence. During this time, they will be allowed to remain with their families in the US and will be able to obtain work authorization for up to three years. After obtaining the green card, beneficiaries will be able to apply for citizenship. The initiative aims to keep families formed by illegal migrants and American citizens together, promoting family and community stability.
